Hawaii Was Born From The Sea

In our 13 years of living in Hawaii we had the pleasure of attending many Luau’s during our time there.

A Luau is a Celebration, a Special Feast.

For the local’s living in Hawaii they represent a coming together of Ohana (Family) to celebrate a birthday, or a wedding, or a graduation, or an anniversary, or just a get together for the closeness of their opus being filled, (bellies.)

Veronica at the Bishop Street Girl Scout Headquarters in Honolulu

She was a Brownie, and a Girl Scout while we lived there, and Gordon and I were Girl Scout Leaders for her Troop.

When we left Hawaii and moved to Maryland, Hawaii stayed in our blood and our hearts.

We mourned the Hawaiian Islands and it’s people for years, never fully getting the many cultures out of our systems.

We still celebrated the cultures and their foods, even to this day, even though we left Hawaii in 1999 to this writing in 2026.

Hawaii is still a big part of all of us.

Hawaii is our Ohana.

It was while we were living in Maryland that we decided to throw a Luau for Veronica’s birthday.

It was a Luau on a budget, but we did it!

I Gifted Veronica With A Photo Album Of Her Birthday Luau In Maryland

The foods we made and served were those that were traditional at Luau’s.

They were also our favorites!  I look forward to updating this page with those photos and recipes.

Aloha and Mahalo,

Julie (Kulii)

Veronica’s Birthday Luau, Sweet Leilani 16!

(Ft. Meade, Maryland)

These were just a few photos from her birthday that I had leftover.

Our menu was perfect!

The food was great, and many people requested the recipes.

I wish that at the time I had photographed all the foods we made.

Of course, Gordon did most of the cooking, but my old friend Sharon helped Gordon make the sushi, and after the Luau the following day, Gordon’s parents made their famous crab cakes out of our leftover crabs.

Here Gordon is blowing the conch shell to call the Ohana to the Luau.

Brodie is  striking the Ipu with his hands as it produces a resonate sound that acts as the heartbeat of the Luau.

The Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Luau

On March 5, 2026 Gordon and I hosted the Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Luau for Brodie and Mackenzie.

It was a lot of fun and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.  If you would like to read more then just click on the link below the photo.

Our Hawaii Whann’s Luau Recipe Booklet

The term ‘Hawaii Whann’s’ comes from Gordon’s mother and how she would designate Whann’s all over the country.  Sarajane and Milton were the ‘Virginia Whann’s.’  And Gordon’s aunt and uncle, Susy and Bob who lived in Arizona were the “Arizona Whann’s.’  Which is why I dubbed us ‘The Hawaii Whann’s’ when I put this book together.

Before we moved from Hawaii in 1999 I sent out Hawaii care packages to some of our favorite people.  I think that I loved putting them together and sending them off, more than some of the recipients felt in receiving them.  I included some coconuts, chopsticks, Macadamia Nut Chocolates, Hawaiian Coffee, some Homemade Items by me, at the time I was painting and stenciling tiles, coconuts, and garden pots, a few other items that I can’t remember, and this Luau Recipe Book.

Banana Poi

Isabelle’s Favorite

This is so easy!  What a better way to use up some ageing Bananas?

Just add some Coconut Cream and Lime Juice to the Squshed up Bananas.

Use some sort of Wafer for Dipping.

My Introduction Letter

I would like to say that I have NO IDEA where I got these recipes from.  NONE!  I do know that we had a computer that I would use to print out my Girl Scout Newsletters at our house.  I did use a lot of graphics, but we had no internet!  So, I did not get these recipes from the internet.  Also, I do not own any cookbook in our house with any of these recipes in them.  Either I once had a book with all of these recipes and used it to copy them off, then the book got lost, or (fill in the blank, because I have no idea otherwise.)

There is another possible reason….The Menehune’s!!!!  They gave me the recipes and then disappeared!  🙂
